Evaluating the Outdoor Durability Offered by Cortec VpCI-126 Blue Film After Exposure to Outdoor Environment
Background: Cortec VpCI-126 Blue film (6 mil, SO# 13591, MB# 06821, rec# 1003) provided stronger mechanical protection as compared to non-corrosion inhibitor treated low density polyethylene film (6 mil) according to test method ASTM G 53 (accelerated outdoor durability and humidity test in Q-U-V accelerated weathering test chamber, Project # 01-251-1125). Outdoor durability testing is sought for Cortec VpCI-126 Blue film (6 mil, SO# 13591, MB# 06821, rec# 1003) and plain low density polyethylene film (6 mil).
Purpose: Expose Cortec VpCI-126 Blue film (6 mil, SO# 13591, MB# 06821, rec# 1003) and plain low density polyethylene film (6 mil) to outdoor environment and observe until ripping of film is evident.
Method: Modified ASTM D 1748-83 (outdoor exposure)
Materials: Q-Panel SAE 1010 Carbon Steel panels
Cortec VpCI-126 Blue film (6 mil, SO# 13591, MB# 06821, rec# 1003)
Cortec VpCI-126 Blue film (4 mil)
Plain low density polyethylene film (6 mil).
Procedure: Three carbon steel panels were wrapped with the following films;
Cortec VpCI-126 Blue film (6 mil, SO# 13591, MB# 06821,rec# 1003),
Cortec VpCI-126 Blue film (4 mil)
Plain low density polyethylene film (6 mil).
The three panels were placed on outdoor rack and observed until ripping occurred.
Results:

Conclusion: Addition of Cortecs masterbatch to the plain polyethylene film increases the UV stability and as a result mechanical properties of the film when exposed to outdoor environment.
The test was discontinued after 12 months, without evidence of premature failure in case of VpCI-126. Control sample (plain LDPE) failed after 10 months.
